The importance of early childhood vision exams is of particular interest to me because I have late diagnosed pediatric glaucoma. I was not vision screened as an infant and by the time my glaucoma was identified, at age 6, I was blind in my right eye. Had I received newborn or infant vision screening I would not be permanently blind in one eye. My glaucoma would have been treated and managed by my pediatric ophthalmologist without vision loss. I have had several surgeries and my left eye is currently at a stable level. One pediatric glaucoma specialist I initially saw informed me that if my left eye had not enlarged to such levels and spontaneously burst releasing some pressure, I would be completely blind.
